Grand Prize for “The Woman with the 5 Elephants” in Washington
The jury of the 8th Silverdocs Documentary Festival in Washington presented the Swiss documentary film “The Woman with the 5 Elephants” by Vadim Jendreyko with the Sterling Award for Best World Feature, endowed with 5,000 dollars, on June 27, 2010. The film chronicles 85-year-old Sveltlana Geier, who has dedicated her life to translating Dostoyevsky’s works into German. Jendreyko’s film won the Quartz Swiss Film Prize 2010 and has been honoured with eight awards at international festivals until now.
The festival jury noted in its statement: "From a filmmaker at the top of his game, this film is a living Vermeer, beautifully framed, elegant and elegiac, with an artistic vision that mirrors and augments its subject. This graceful and compelling work explores how beauty and creativity can transcend the harshness of life, and the jury believes it will be as rewarding in 40 years as it is today."
