Der Film zeigt die Entstehung des Schweizerischen Tropeninstituts unter der Leitung von Rudolf Geigy. Von seinen Angestellten und Studenten wurde er teils bewundert, teils gefürchtet. Seine Launen und Ausbrüche waren legendär. Als reicher Industriellensohn konnte er sich praktisch alles leisten und investierte grosszügig in den Aufbau des Tropeninstituts, leistete aber auch beachtlich Entwicklungshilfe in Afrika.
