Swiss Film Prize 2008: Nominations and Gala Awards Ceremony
New categories for actors, a gala awards ceremony in a new venue and an honourable distinction with the “Quartz” trophy – these are the cornerstones of the Swiss Film Prize 2008. Fifteen films, five screenplays and eleven actors/actresses have been nominated for the national awards. The Swiss Film Prize 2008 will be awarded for eight categories on 23rd January 2008 in Solothurn in the presence of invited guests from culture, politics and business. The nominations (The entire dossier of information concerning nominations can be downloaded as a pdf. You will find it at the end of this text.) were made by a commission (dossier of information) chosen by the Federal Department of Home Affairs. A total of 380,000 Swiss Francs is at stake for the nominees. 85 films – around 80 hours of Swiss film – were available for selection. Admissible films were those shown during the current year at important film festivals at home and abroad or in the cinema and registered for the Swiss Film Prize.
The Jury, presided over by actress Marthe Keller, awards the film prizes in the categories “Best Fiction Film”, “Best Documentary Film”, “Best Short Film”, “Best Screenplay”, and in the new categories “Best Actress”, “Best Actor” and to the “Best Emerging Actor or Actress”. It also awards a “Special Jury Prize”. The jury is composed of Daniel de Roulet, author, Peter Dinges, German Federal Film Board, Florian Keller, journalist, Theres Scherer-Kollbrunner, producer and Jacqueline Veuve, filmmaker.
SWISS FILMS has found a new venue for the Prize Awards Gala in an indoor tennis arena at the CIS Sports Centre Solothurn, a location which offers freedom for design and space for the expected 600 guests. During a dinner, the film award winners will be honoured for their outstanding performances with the new “Quartz” trophy created by the internationally renowned artist Sylvie Fleury. “The presentation of the Swiss Film Prize 2008 offers an elegant platform on which to honour the aspect at the centre of the celebrations before a large audience: the best Swiss films and performances of the past year”, explains Kathrin Rebsamen from SWISS FILMS and responsible for the project management of the Swiss Film Prize.
The Swiss Film Prize 2008 is under the auspices of the Federal Office of Culture. SWISS FILMS is responsible for the general organisation as well as the promotion of this national award. The event is organised with the support of SRG SSR idée suisse, the film festivals of Solothurn, Nyon and Locarno.
