Swiss presence in Cannes 2011: coproductions screened in Directors’ Fortnight
The Italian-Swiss feature film “Corpo Celeste” by Alice Rohrwacher (coproduction: Amka Film, Savosa) and the 30-minute short film “Nuvem – Le poisson lune” by Basil Da Cunha, a Swiss-Portuguese production of Box Productions (Vaud) and Thera Production, will be presented in the 43rd Directors’ Fortnight programme, the most important section in Cannes apart from the competition. Switzerland will present two further films in the Directors’ Fortnight programme: the short film “Armand 15 ans l'été” by Swiss-French director and graduate of ECAL in Lausanne; and “Porfirio” by Columbian director Alejandro Landes, coproduced by Swiss producer Maja Zimmermann.
Jacqueline Zünd will present her award-winning documentary film "Goodnight Nobody" in the ACID programme in Cannes. The programme by the French Directors Guild will screen nine innovative films also provide assistance at the festival in Cannes in finding a distribution firm in France.
The film "Corpo Celeste" tells the story of 13-year-old Marta, who returns to her birthplace in Calabria after living with her family in Switzerland for ten years. In an attempt to become acquainted with her new surroundings and peers, the shy girl decides to attend confirmation lessons at the Catholic church. The film, co produced by Amka Film (Ticino) and the Italian Swiss Broadcasting Service TSI, is a feature film debut by Alice Rohrwacher, the sister of actress Alba Rohrwacher. Basil Da Cunha, 26-year-old director and graduate from HEAD in Geneva, is presenting his eighth short film: "Nuvem - Le poisson lune." His previous film "A côté" was nominated for the Swiss Film Prize "Quartz 2010."
This year Swiss film producers are the focus of attention at major film festivals and markets worldwide. Producer Dan Wechsler (Bord Cadre Films, Geneva), whose coproduction "Aurora" (director: Cristi Puiu) was screened last year in the "Un Certain Regard" section, is this year's "Producer on the Move." With this event, European Film Promotion offers 25 young European producers and their projects a platform in Cannes.
Film director Georges Gachot ("Rio Sonata") will attend The Documentary Brunch on May 17. This event is organised by Marché International du Film as a meeting place for the directors of outstanding documentary films.
