Tuur the shoemaker and his wife Emma are celebrating their wedding anniversary. The family and the entire village are celebrating with them. Strangely, Tuur is “absent” and seems bored by the party. The next morning Emma realizes that Tuur has disappeared. He did not sleep in “his” bed! Gerda, Tuur’s sister who lives with them but is ill and confined to her bed, is furious when she learns that Tuur has gone to live with Josée, the other sister. They have been feuding for years. Despite Gerda’s insistence, Emma obstinately refuses to go and retrieve her husband. So Tuur stays on at the cabaret run by his sister Josée and her friend Odette, a singer. Emma finds herself alone to deal with the shoemaker’s shop and her hysterical sister-in-law.
