The first weekend of August 2004 was one of the busiest ever in Zermatt on the Matterhorn Mountain. Senn’s film follows events unfold as over a 100 people bide their time at the Hörnlihütte hut at an altitude of 3200 meters, waiting to climb the Matterhorn the next day. At 5.30 am that morning Japanese tourists are poised to photograph the first rays of sun touching the Matterhorn’s peak. But there is serious work to be done too. In the valley rescue teams are on alert, as it is one of those weekends in which inexperienced mountain tourists thoughtlessly risk their lives. What lies behind this fascination with the Matterhorn, one of Europe’s highest and most perilous mountains?
