Within the next ten years the first passenger trains at 250 kilometers per hour will speed through the Alps. To make this possible, minions from all over Europe are forcing two 57 kilometer long tubes through the Swiss Gotthard mountain. Never before has such a long tunnel been dug so deep under such a collossal mountain. The film explains how and why, demonstrating how a 400 meter long drilling machine eats its way through the rock face. These men face hard work, danger and risks, but their daunting task is compensated by the pride they feel to be building the longest tunnel in the world.
