Amsler is a prostitute found strangled in a pond, with slashed earlobes. When detective Hunkeler finds his sidekick Schirmer also murdered with slashed earlobes, however, he gradually begins to doubt his abilities, even though he is actually on the right track. The perpetrator is Gazoni, owner of a brothel and Marlene Mauch’s lover, who happens to be Schirmer’s ex-girlfriend. Gazoni is troubled by his past and unconsciously seeks contact with Hunkeler. Although the police are treating the Schirmer case as a murder involving drugs, Hunkeler is of another opinion.
