The Swiss filmmaker S. travels to New York to make a film about the singles scene. There he finds an entire service industry devoted to the business of loneliness. In the course of his research his own history becomes enmeshed with the theme of the film. He travels to Boston to meet a woman he has finally found after a long search. He falls in love with her but his illusions are soon crushed. Back home in Switzerland, S. sits in front of the video monitor, and all that remains are arbitrarily manipulatable sequences of images.
