The Zurich Symphony Orchestra tours with 60 musicians through China, with 11 concerts scheduled within 14 days. Heidi Hiltebrand accompanied the musicians on their turbulent tour. In Peking and in Tianjin, a modern composition was performed by the Swiss orchestra and a Chinese orchestra – involving more than 100 musicians – but it aroused many emotions. The piece was not understood in China. The Chinese adore the Viennese waltz. The orchestra yielded to their desire and performed Viennese waltzes henceforth, but even then the audience behaved differently than what the musicians are accustomed to. An interesting cultural exchange!
