With a rolling of carpets and a covering of furniture, a Grand Hotel in the Swiss alps ushers in the off season, while director Christoph Marthaler and his theatrical family rob the hotel of its sleep. Musician-member of the troupe and scion of the hotel family, Jürg Kienberger reflects with subtle irony upon the evolution of a Marthaler production. Over the course of weeks, the actors, quirky loners who are united when they sing, summon the ghosts from 100 years of the hotel’s history as they rehearse. A feast of music and poetry, at once jovial and saturnine.
