Curt Herzstark comes from Vienna, is half Jewish and the inventor of the first pocket calculator, a worldwide sensation. In the midst of the chaos of war he lands in the Buchenwald concentration camp, where he manages to save other prisoners’ lives and survive. After the war he is brought by the Prince of Liechtenstein into the country to initiate a showcase company for the industrialization of that small country. Herzstark produces his pocket calculators, becomes something of a miniature Messiah in the country and turns farmers into highly gifted precision mechanics. However, he eventually loses in the electronic race, losing his family as well.
