The village of Andermatt is facing a serious structural crisis: The military has removed its base there and the hotels and cable cars are in urgent need of modernisation. The youth see no prospects for a future and are abandoning the village. Only a miracle can save this mountain village, claim the locals. Then a Messiah appears from far-away Egypt: Samih Sawiris, the billionaire and developer who wants to create a “new Andermatt”, featuring an 18-hole golf course, five-star hotels, noble condominiums and exclusive villas. Is this an Alpine Disneyland or a realistic opportunity for Andermatt?
