With the ringing of bells and yodelling on New Year’s Eve, the ugly, the beautiful, and the beautifully ugly “Sylvesterkläuse” in the canton of Appenzell uphold an annual tradition of making the transition from the old year into the new. Wearing awe-inspiring masks, elaborate headdresses and costumes, these figures go from house to house singing and dancing, thereby cultivating an ancient St. Nicolas custom whose origins are hidden in obscurity. In the fierceness of this custom one can perhaps detect vestiges of earlier defiance against authority.
