Madame Célat lives with her son and grandson. This old lady from Martinique long ago realised that every day is not Sunday, and that constant vigilance and hard work are necessary to make life as pleasant as possible. But should the world collapse around her one unlucky day she would no doubt be able to maintain her unshakeable faith in life thanks to her ancestral optimism, the warmth of her dreams, the comforting shoulder of an imperial courtesan and the never-failing pleasure of watching the neighbours get on with their lives. Madame Célat is an indomitable woman for whom everything is always “just fine”.
