Everything began in 53 when two young artists exchanged apartments. Sanyu, a Chinese painter and Robert Frank. They remained close until the death of Sanyu in 64. 30 years later, Frank received a letter from Rita Wong, entrusted with listing the work of Sanyu. The letter revived recollections of a friend and became the starting point for a cinematographic quest of fragments of memory.

Tutto comincia nel '53, quando due giovani artisti si scambiano l'appartamento. Sanyu, un pittore cinese e Robert Frank. Rimangono amici sino alla morte prematura di Sanyu, nel '64. Trent'anni dopo, Frank riceve una lettera da Rita Wong, incaricata di catalogare il lavoro del pittore. La lettera ravviva i ricordi legati alla loro amicizia e diviene spunto per una ricerca cinematografica sui frammenti della memoria.
