Between 1942 and 1943, 250 Swiss medical staff volunteered to help out on the Eastern Front, in the belief that they were acting on behalf of the prestigious Swiss Red Cross. Little did they know that they were a pawn in negotiations between Switzerland and Nazi Germany. Integrated into the Nazi medical corps, they were not allowed to treat Russian soldiers or civilians, and became helpless bystanders of Nazi genocide and deprivation. On their return to Switzerland, they were forced to sign an agreement to keep quiet. Now, 50 years later, some of them share their memories for the first time. Gonseth's film recounts a chapter in Switzerland's WWII history which many would rather forget, and gives a voice to a group of idealists who are still haunted by their experiences.
