Vodka Lemon
Fiction, 102 min.

by Hiner Saleem
Switzerland, September 2003
Armenia is a nation that once was a part of the Soviet Union. Like many people of the former Soviet Union, who have witnessed a decline in their quality of life since the fall and break up of the former super-power, many Armenians are having sentimental feelings about the old days. An old man visits the grave of his wife, something of a ritual. On these visits, he encounters another woman at a nearby gravesite. A tender relationship develops into a love so full of respect and warmth that the snows of Armenia almost melt around them. Some things have not changed since the Soviet times... it's cold, there's plenty of wind, snow, bad clothing and bad housing, and people still do their drinking outside. How about a vodka lemon?
