Hinterrhein is a mountain village located halfway between Zurich and Milan. The post office, school and cheese-making shop disappeared long ago. Like many other villages, Hinterrhein – with a population of 800 – is forced to deal with the fact that its inhabitants are moving away. In addition, it must address the concerns of the farmers, who feel their work is no longer valued and who complain about the inspectors sent from Bern to survey the organic food crops. Sixty years ago, cameraman Hermann Dietrich filmed the work of the men and women here: for example, haymaking in alpine meadows, where the slopes are so steep that the farmers wore crampons on their shoes. Or the “Buuchi”, the communal laundry at the fountain on the village square, where wood-ashes were used to bleach the clothes. Much has changed in the village since then. But some things have also remained the same. The film portrays village people whose work has become easier and whose lives have become more comfortable and who nevertheless wistfully remain. He also portrays people who, in spite of increasingly difficult conditions, look optimistically into the future.
