Siachen, una guerra per il ghiaccio

Documentary, 82 min.

by Fulvio Mariani, Mario Casella

Switzerland, June 2005

The history and day-to-day life of the soldiers involved in the world’s highest, less known and most absurd war. This con. ict began 20 years ago, in 1984, and was a battle for the control over the Siachen glacier (5000-7500 m, i.e. 16’400-24’600 ft) located at the extreme northern edge of the Indian-Pakistan border. This very peculiar war is one that normally would not have been imagined, not even by the most cynical of strategist! Twenty years of con. ict simply to maintain sovereignty over a few hundred square kilometres of ice and rock lost somewhere in the middle of the Himalaya. The best-known world newspaper have published articles about this forgotten war, yet photographs of the conflict are extremely rare. As for .flm, noone has ever .filmed this conflict from either opposing sides! In 2004, for the first time, our .filming crew was allowed to .film on both sides of the frontline.
