Emil Bodenmann, a former butcher, was 87 years old when he decided to leave Romanshorn and move to Pattaya, Thailand, for good. Now, at the age of 90, he lives in a hotel room with his Thai girlfriend Nim. Bodenmann is not the only one to have made this move: hundreds of elderly Swiss men have taken the decision to spend the rest of their lives in Pattaya, to move to a warmer climate where, according to Bodenmann, one is more than simply “over the hill”. Most live with Thai women and some have ensconced themselves comfortably, and the real estate market for foreigners is booming.
