Actually, the only thing retired police inspector Hunkeler wanted was to enjoy his old passion for the theatre with the season tickets for opening night he received as a farewell gift. But then Bernhard Vetter, the egocentric stage director and leading man, is hauled out of the Rhine with his eyes missing after the controversial premiere of “Oedipus Rex” in the Basel Theatre. Hunkeler’s successor, Madörin, places Vetter’s ex-girlfriend under arrest as his principal suspect. Hunkeler does everything he can to find the real culprit, but this time his usually reliable instinct plays a nasty trick on him.
