Over his long career, René Burri has photographed many historic battles and in the bullfight he identified an allegory of man constantly fighting the animal side of his being. The bullfighter’s struggle in the arena, Picasso’s struggle to depict the horror of Guernica, man’s first paintings in the caves of Lascaux, created in preparation for hunting; and the struggle of a child to preserve his innocence: these are the extraordinary images which are born of René Burri’s lens when in the 1950s he placed himself before a bull.
