“Lamento della Ninfa” is one of Claudio Monteverdi’s most famous madrigals and an outstanding example marking the composer’s transition from polyphony to monody in the first half of the 17th century. Central to the piece is a nymph gazing at the heavens and lamenting her lost love. Her singing vacillates between sorrow and fury, despair and pride, visualising the fragility of love by invoking suffering that engenders a betrayal of love.
