Bernard Comment, who has been living abroad as a writer, decides to return to his native Switzerland to find out what it is that binds together the inhabitants of this multicultural nation. He begins by studying recent history and myths, which it seems are closely interconnected. Following the trail of the ants on Swiss 1000 franc notes he finds himself in the underground passages of the national defence network, and in the shelters built for the protection of the civilian population in the event of war. Along the way, Comment discovers that his fellow countrymen have many contrasting views and attitudes about their homeland. At the end of his voyage of discovery the writer, turned journalist, realises that the Swiss spirit which so often prefers myth and illusion to reality and historical fact, has certain unusual twists to it that he never suspected, and which are unintentionally funny and perhaps revealing.
