Following the death of his wife, heart surgeon and voyeur Steffen Hennings tries to find a remedy for his loneliness in the affection he feels for his colleague Katharina Lumins. While stalking Katharina he suddenly finds himself just yards from the scene of a crime, as a brutal serial killer assaults his latest victim. The murderer directs the suspicions of the police to Hennings, who is arrested but succeeds in escaping. He just manages to take Rosenblum, a cynical police psychiatrist, as his hostage. The conflict between these two leads to a free-for-all discussion on the nature of reality, friendship and trust.
