Eurotravelling
Documentary, 52 min.
by Stephan Wicki, Karin Fromherz-Gemperle
Switzerland, 2000
A group of Japanese on a guided tour of Europe find the pace fast, the programme ambitious and the cultures encountered entirely foreign. In the space of just 14 days they see one famous sight after another flash past: London, Paris, the Swiss Alps, Rome… a blur of ruins, cultural monuments, landmarks and natural beauty spots. As time rushes on they do their best to “document” each event and record each sight on camera. Their backpacks stuffed with souvenirs, the group boards the jumbo jet that will take them back to the land of the rising sun. Europe soons fades into the distance. Several weeks later we again meet these “Eurotravellers”. What is the Europe that comes into their minds? What does the photographic record show?
