26.01.2011

The Federal Office of Culture (FOC) announced the 35 nominations for the Swiss Film Prize «Quartz 2011» at the «Night of the Nominations» in Solothurn on 26 January. Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter and Christian Frei, President of the Swiss Film Academy, opened the evening with a speech to greet the many guests. The award ceremony of the Swiss Film Prize «Quartz 2011» will be held in the KKL Luzern (Culture and Convention Centre) on 12 March.

This year's nominations are presented in nine categories. A total of CHF 425,000 in prize money will be awarded to the nominated films and persons. The city of Lucerne has donated CHF 15,000 for the «Best Film Score» category.

Selection of the nominees
Under the auspices of the Swiss Film Academy, presided over by film director Christian Frei since summer 2010, around 300 Academy members voted on some 120 Swiss films. A nine-member nomination committee announced the nominations basing their decision on the Academy's recommendations. The nomination committee, which is appointed by the Federal Department of Home Affairs (FDHA), is comprised of the following members of the Academy: Madeleine Hirsiger, journalist; Christian Jungen, journalist; Ivo Kummer, Director of the Solothurn Film Festival; Beat Marti, actor; Tiziana Mona, journalist; Xavier Ruiz, film director and producer; Pascal Trächslin, film producer and distributor; Romed Wyder, film director and producer; and Ruxandra Zenide, film director.

Winners of the «Quartz 2011»
The second stage occurs in February, when the members of the Film Academy select the winners of the Swiss Film Prize «Quartz 2011». A jury comprised of Academy members and appointed by the Federal Department of Home Affairs will decide on the winners, based on the recommendations made by the Academy, and also award a «Special Jury Prize» honouring an outstanding technical and artistic achievement.

Organisation of the «Quartz 2011»
The Federal Office of Culture has entrusted SWISS FILMS, the film promotion agency, with the organisation of the Swiss Film Prize. It is responsible for coordinating the nomination and jury procedures in collaboration with the Swiss Film Academy. The award ceremony will be held for the third time in the KKL Luzern. It is under the patronage of the SRG SSR and carried out in collaboration with the Federal Office of Culture, SWISS FILMS and the Swiss Film Academy.
