The Swiss director Lionel Baier, from Lausanne, was honoured with an award for Best Director with his film “Les grandes ondes (à l’ouest)” at the Trophées Francophones du Cinéma.

The Swiss-French-Portuguese coproduction was up for a nomination in three categories: apart from Best Director the film also had a nomination in the category of Best Female Performance (Valérie Donzelli) and Best Male Performance (Michel Vuillermoz).

The comedy in French is about three radio reporters from Switzerland caught up in the turmoil of the 1970s in Portugal. The film was coproduced by Rita Productions (Geneva) and Bande à part Films (Lausanne) and has been sold in several countries in Europe and South America. It celebrated its world premiere on the Piazza Grande at the Festival del film Locarno in 2013.

The award aims to strengthen the francophone culture and was presented in ten categories by the Académie francophone du cinéma. 22 feature films and five short films from 16 French-speaking countries were nominated. Awards were presented to films from Algeria, Belgium, France, Congo, Morocco, Cambodia, Canada and Senegal, together with Les grandes ondes (à l’ouest). The award ceremony was broadcasted as part of a gala event on TV5 Monde on November 3, 2014.
