Swiss short film “Parvaneh” on the Oscar shortlist

Talkhon Hamzavi’s “Parvaneh” has been shortlisted for an Oscar nomination in the category of Live Action Short Film.

A total of 141 short film productions qualified for a nomination, ten of which the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has placed on the shortlist. Five films in this category will ultimately be nominated for an Oscar. “Parvaneh” is Hamzavi’s graduation film at the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdk). The executive producer is Stefan Eichenberger, who now manages the Contrast Film company office in Bern.

Talkhon Hamzavi already won the Silver Medal as the Best Foreign Film with “Parvaneh” at the 40th Student Academy Awards in 2013. Furthermore, the ZHdK production was also honoured with the First Steps Award for the Best Short Film (under 25 minutes) in Berlin last year. The award for emerging filmmakers is presented to graduation films by students at German, Austrian and Swiss film schools. “Parvaneh” has been screened at numerous film festivals around the world and honoured with many awards.

Whether “Parvaneh” and The Circle” by Stefan Haupt (production: Contrast Film), the official Swiss candidate for a nomination as Best Foreign Language Film, have been nominated for an Oscar will be announced by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Hollywood by mid-January 2015. The award ceremony will take place on February 22. This year, a total of seven Swiss short films are contending for an Oscar nomination.
