Advance showing of “Letter to Anna” in Berlin

06.02.2008

Eric Bergkraut’s documentary film “Letter to Anna” – dedicated to Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaja, who was well known for her opposition to the government and murdered in Moscow in October 2006 – will premiere in Berlin within the framework of “Cinema for Peace” on Sunday, February 10. The television adaptation of the film, under the title of “Ein Artikel zuviel”, will be broadcast by the German Swiss Broadcasting Service (SF) on February 18.
Eric Bergkraut based his film on the extensive footage he had gathered while interviewing Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaja in conjunction with his research on the Chechen human rights activist Sainap Gaschajewa. Sainap Gaschaiewa, the protagonist in Eric Bergkraut’s film “Coca: Die Taube aus Tschetschenien”, was presented with the International Human Rights Movie Award at the 6th “Cinema for Peace” Charity Gala in 2007. The film “Letter to Anna” is a co-production between p.s. 72 productions in Zurich and Zero One Film Berlin, in collaboration with the German Swiss Broadcasting Service (SF), French Swiss Broadcasting Service (TSR), Italian Swiss Broadcasting Service (RTSI) and German television stations 3sat, Das Erste, MDR and RBB.

The Cinema for Peace Award and Charity Gala was initiated in 2002 and is supported by artists from all over the world: for example, Monica Bellucci, George Clooney, Catherine Deneuve, Nicole Kidman, Liza Minelli, Susan Sarandon and Catherine Zeta-Jones. The event organizers have invited members of the international film community to create a platform for peace and humanity. The screening of “Letter to Anna” will take place on February 10, with Anna Politkovskaja’s daughter, her son and her sister, as well as Garry Kasparov and Catherine Deneuve in the Berliner Ensemble, in attendance.
