18.01.2010

A porcelain Pierrot, endowed with 100,000 euros, was presented to the German-Swiss coproduction “Der grosse Kater” by Wolfgang Panzer on January 15, 2010. The Bavarian Film Awards for outstanding achievements in filmmaking have been presented at a festive gala by the Bavarian state government, together with Bavarian Broadcasting, since 1979. The presentation of the 31st Bavarian Film Awards took place at the Prinzregententheater in Munich on January 15, 2010.
Similar to last year the award for Best Film, endowed with 200,000 euros, was shared this year as well. It was presented to “Wüstenblume”, the film version of the autobiography of the human rights activist and former top model Waris Dirie, and to the drama “Der grosse Kater”, starring Bruno Ganz in the leading role. The film will be launched in cinemas in the German-speaking region of Switzerland on January 21, 2010. It is a political intrigue based on Thomas Hürlimann’s bestseller, portraying two days in the life of a top politician who is forced to face how relative the meaning of power becomes when your own child is dying. According to the jury, the film is particularly important “in times during which politicians are more often measured by their public effectiveness than by their actual deeds.”

The award of the Collecting Society for Exploitation Rights in Cinematographic Works (VGF), endowed with 60 000 euros, went to the DRIFE Deyle & Richter film production for “Waffenstillstand”. This film was co-financed by DCM Mitte Productions in St.Gallen.

The Bavarian Film Awards amount to a total of 300,000 euros. The main award is endowed with 200,000 euros and honours the best German producer for “the single most exceptional German film that leaves the greatest overall impression.” The renowned Bavarian Film Awards rank among the most highly regarded awards for filmmaking in Germany. Further honours include categories in acting, directing, screenplay, cinematography, editing, film score and production design.
