European Film Awards 2003: Nominations are still ongoing

28.05.2003

Even though it is not as prestigious as the US Academy Awards, Europe’s movie landscape would be unthinkable without it: the European Film Awards held for the fifteenth time on December 2003 in Berlin, Germany. The deadline for the fiction film category ends June 15, and nominations can be entered by film magazines, institutions (in Switzerland by the Swiss Film Center), members of the European Film Academy (EFA)* as well as European producers.
From the films entered into the competition, a committee chosen by the EFA will select thirty films, which will then be shown to the 1,527 members of the Academy in the form of a DVD or VHS copy. The members in turn are able to nominate three films or filmmakers for each category. Finally, these nominations are compiled, and from among the top three, a jury of EFA members chooses the winner in each category.
In addition to “European Film 2003”, prizes are awarded in the following categories: “European Director”, “European Actress”, “European Actor”, “European Screenwriter”, and “European Cinematographer”. There are eight additional awards supported or organized by various institutions. Of special interest for Switzerland is Prix Arte for “Best Documentary Film” (deadline: end of July) with five or six films nominated and Prix UIP for “Best Short Film” (length up to 25 minutes). Short films that have previously been awarded prizes at eleven European festivals will be automatically nominated (festivals include Angers, Berlin, Edinburgh, Gent, Grimstad, Krakau, Tampere, Sarajevo, Valladolid, Venice, and Vila do Conde). Films produced by July 1, 2002, are eligible for this year’s prizes.
