Annual Report 2022

11.07.2023

More Swiss film productions, increased funding, greater visibility on the web and new activities in the series and XR realm. These are just a few of the key messages in the SWISS FILMS Annual Report. The report provides statistics on the worldwide distribution of Swiss film productions at festivals, in cinemas or on streaming platforms and outlines how SWISS FILMS contributes to the dissemination and promotion of Swiss filmmaking.

A particular highlight during the past year was the largest focus ever dedicated to Swiss animation filmmaking at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival with over 100 films and numerous events: a successful joint venture between SWISS FILMS and a large number of professionals in Swiss animation filmmaking (cf. page 12/50).

The year 2022 proved to be a record year in terms of support measures, the funds of which directly benefit the Swiss film industry. Never before has SWISS FILMS received so many applications for festival support. There was also a substantial increase in payments for export promotion. An overview of the applications and support contributions can be found on page 16/54.

With Swiss Immersion Festival Support, the new pilot measure introduced in 2022, participation of immersive projects in more festival sections can be supported in addition to the existing XR Festival Support. More information on the new measure can be found on page 17/55.

With 684 projects, more works than ever before were entered last year in the Swiss Films Portal – the SWISS FILMS database. For the first time, Swiss series from recent years were also recorded and published on the website in 2022. The site has registered significant growth in the first year after the relaunch. More on doubling the website’s scope can be found on page 22/60.

For the first time, SWISS FILMS analysed the digital distribution of Swiss film productions on streaming platforms in Europe in a study – a summary of which can be found on page 34/72. Also for the first time, SWISS FILMS is publishing a sustainability report, outlining how SWISS FILMS intends to reduce its carbon footprint. The results can also be found in this report (page 8/46).
