“La Liste de Carla” unites audiences in Belgrade, Sarajevo and Zagreb

12.12.2007

On December 13, 2007 – the day on which Carla Del Ponte announced to the press that she would take leave of her position as the chief prosecutor at the International War Crimes Tribunal in The Hague – parallel screenings of the Swiss documentary film “La Liste de Carla” by Marcel Schüpbach were held simultaneously in the capital cities of Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia. Against the background of the continuing impunity of war criminals, the special screenings and discussions in Belgrade, Sarajevo and Zagreb – organized by local NGOs with support from the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) – constitute an impressive act in ensuring that all will not be forgotten.
In his film “La Liste de Carla” (released in 2006), Marcel Schüpbach followed the chief prosecutor of the Yugoslavia Tribunal step by step in her unremitting battle to extradite the last remaining fugitive war criminals Ratko Mladic, Radovan Karadzic and Ante Gotovina. The film, which documents both Carla Del Ponte’s perseverance and the governments’ schemes, enabled the shift from impunity to accountability to be carried forward at three local sites. In Belgrade a discussion with the Serbian human rights activist Nataša Kandic was held after the screening; in Sarajevo discussions between the audience and the Bosnian professor of law Zdravko Grebo were carried out; in Zagreb a discussion with the Croatian University professor Žarko Puhovski was held. Carla Del Ponte was personally present as a special guest at the screening of the film in The Hague, which was organized by “Movies that Matter”, an international foundation for human rights.
