Locarno: Recognition for Swiss films

At the 56th Locarno International Film Festival which ended on August 16th, 2003, several productions from the French part of Switzerland were given awards: Pierre-Yves Borgeaud and Stéphane Blok received the Golden Leopard in the International Video Competition for their film “iXième, Journal d’un Prisonnier” (iXième, Journal of a Prisoner). They will share the winning prize of 30,000 Swiss Francs (CHF) with an Argentinian production. The youth jury bestowed their second prize (4,000 CHF) to “Au sud des nuages” by Jean-François Amiguet. In the “Leopards of Tomorrow” section, Frédéric Mermoud’s short film “L’Escalier” (The Staircase) was given the “Pardino d’Oro” (a 6,000 CHF-prize funded by Swiss television SRG SSR idée suisse), while the “Cinema e Gioventù” jury awarded their prize (1,500 CHF) to Bruno Deville’s short film “Viandes” (Meats).
In the “Pardi di domani” section, additional awards were given to short films such as “Le dormeur” (The Sleeper) by Richard Szotyori (Pardino d’Argento – Kodak prize of 6,000 CHF), “Meyers” by Steven Hayes (Action Light Prize of 33,000 CHF), and “L’Escalier” by Frédéric Mermoud (Online-Holweger prize of 15,000 CHF).

The documentary film “Mais im Bundeshuus” (The Helvetic Genie) by Jean-Stéphane Bron, which is dedicated to the Genlex-debate in the Swiss Parliament, and the musical drama “Mein Name ist Bach” (“Jagged Harmonies”) received great interest by the audience and international recognition at the Piazza Grande. Within the “Filmmakers of the Present” section of the festival, much attention was given to Daniel Schweizer’s documentary film “Skinhead Attitude” as well as to Peter Liechti’s film “Hans im Glück” (“Lucky Jack”) as part of the Critic’s Week.
