“Return to Gorée” is Opening Film at festival in Chicago

The music documentary “Return to Gorée” (produced by Lausanne company CAB Productions) with the Senegalese composer and singer Youssou N’Dour, will the Opening Film at the 5th African Diaspora Film Festival in Chicago, taking place from June 22 – 28, 2007. With the support of the Swiss Benevolent Society of Chicago and the Swiss Consulate General, the film’s US premiere will take in the Facets Cinematheque in Chicago on June 22.
The film celebrated its worldwide premiere at the “Visions du réel” festival in Nyon, Switzerland, in April, where it took part in the festival competition and was awarded the Suissimage/SSA prize. In “Return to Gorée”, the Western Swiss director Pierre-Ives Borgeaud accompanies the renowned singer Youssou N’Dour on his journey following the trail of slaves and the jazz music they invented. It leads from the West African Island of Gorée to the United States and on to Europe. Along their exploration, the protagonists encounter extraordinary musicians and people of distinct personalities.



The African Diaspora Film Festival (ADFF) in Chicago is the sister-event to the African Diaspora festival in New York (NY-ADFF), with its focus on bringing together different races and film cultures. It was founded by Diarah N’Daw-Spech and Reinaldo Barroso-Spech in 1993, a couple who has been active in the African-American film scene and, through its ArtMattan Productions, also brought the Swiss music film “Maria Bethânia – musica e perfume” by Georges Gachot to US cinemas.
