Irène Lichtenstein’s artist portrait “Mario Benjamin” (production: Troubadour Films, Geneva) was honoured with an award for Best Documentary Film at the Montreal International Black Film Festival (September 23-27, 2009). The focus of this festival is the 5th Montreal International Haitian Film Festival, showcasing more than 30 films from and about Haiti.
In her 52-minute film, Genovese filmmaker Irène Lichtenstein provides insight into the works and world of Mario Benjamin, one of the leading figures of contemporary art in Haiti. During an exhibition in June 2008 in Port-au-Prince, this charismatic man shares his thoughts on his work and the difficulty of being an artist in a Third World country. The film will be released in cinemas in Switzerland and France in February 2010.
