Swiss Film Award 2020: BEYOND THE HORIZON and THE JOURNEY each honoured with two awards

The Swiss Federal Office of Culture announced on Monday that the fiction film BEYOND THE HORIZON and the documentary film THE JOURNEY were each honoured with two Swiss Film Awards 2020: for Best Fiction Film and Best Documentary film, respectively, as well as in another category.

The Swiss Federal Office of Culture announced on Monday that the fiction film BEYOND THE HORIZON and the documentary film THE JOURNEY were each honoured with two Swiss Film Awards 2020: for Best Fiction Film and Best Documentary film, respectively, as well as in another category. This year’s award ceremony in Zurich had to be cancelled because of the coronavirus epidemic, the awards will be presented at the Locarno Film Festival in August 2020.

The Swiss-Belgian coproduction BEYOND THE HORIZON (LE MILIEU DE L’HORIZON) by Delphine Lehericey (Box Productions, Elena Tatti) won the award for Best Fiction Film. The film, featuring French actress Laetitia Casta in one of the leading roles, celebrated its world premiere in the New Directors section at the San Sebastian International Film Festival. The second award for BEYOND THE HORIZON went to Joanne Giger for Best Screenplay. World sales for the film have been acquired by Be For Films in Brussels.

The award for Best Documentary Film goes to THE JOURNEY (IMMER UND EWIG) by Fanny Bräuning, (Hugofilm Productions, Thomas Thümena). The music for the film was composed by Olivia Pedroli, who was honoured with the award for Best Film Score. The film premiered at DOK Leipzig 2018; the world rights have been acquired by Rise and Shine World Sales in Berlin.

Awards for animation and graduation films

AVERAGE HAPPINESS by Maja Gehrig (Langfilm / Bernard Lang AG) won the award for Best Animation Film. The seven-minute animated short by the graduate from HSLU celebrated its premiere at DOK Leipzig in 2019 and was honoured with an Honorary Mention by the jury at the Clermont-Ferrand Short Film Festival in February.

The documentary film ISOLA by Aurelio Buchwalder, produced at the Zurich University of the Arts ZHdK with maximage, and the 17-minute fiction film STILL WORKING by Julietta Korbel from the Ecole Cantonale d'Art de Lausanne ECAL (produced with Thera Film) were awarded ex aequo in the Best Graduation Film category.

Awards for Sven Schelker and Miriam Stein 

The awards for Best Actor and Best Actress go to Sven Schelker as the eco-activist Bruno Manser in the biopic PARADISE WAR - THE STORY OF BRUNO MANSER (BRUNO MANSER - DIE STIMME DES REGENWALDES) by Niklaus Hilber and to Miriam Stein for her role in Micha Lewinsky’s comedy ONE-WAY TO MOSCOW (MOSKAU EINFACH!). The award for Best Performance in a Supporting Role goes to Cecilia Steiner in THE WORKING MAN (DER BÜEZER) by Hans Kaufmann. 

The trophy for the category of Best Cinematography goes to filmmaker Basil Da Cunha for his camera work in the film O FIM DO MUNDO, which he also directed. The award for Best Film Editing goes to Jann Anderegg for his contribution to BAGHDAD IN MY SHADOW by Samir.

The Special Academy Award goes to the chief lighting technician Ernst Brunner for his lighting design in the fiction films TAMBOUR BATTANT and SEKURITAS

Award ceremony at Locarno Film Festival

This year’s award ceremony had to be cancelled becaxuse of the coronavirus epidemic. The awards will be presented at a special event at the Locarno Film Festival, together with the Honorary Award. The Federal Office of Culture (FOC) will announce the winner of the Honorary Award 2020 prior to the event. 

The Swiss Film Award is a production by the Federal Office of Culture FOC in partnership with SRG SSR and the Association Quartz Genève Zürich and organised in collaboration with SWISS FILMS, the Swiss Film Academy and the Solothurn Film Festival.
