Swiss Film Award 2021: Five awards for MY LITTLE SISTER; THE NEW GOSPEL is best documentary film

The award ceremony for the Swiss Film Awards was held online this evening. The winners in the two main categories were the fiction film MY LITTLE SISTER and the documentary film THE NEW GOSPEL.

MY LITTLE SISTER (Vega Film AG, Ruth Waldburger) by Stéphanie Chuat and Véronique Reymond won the award for Best Fiction Film 2021. The film, featuring German star actors Nina Hoss and Lars Eidinger in the leading roles, garnered four further awards: the award for Best Screenplay went to the two directors; Swiss actress Marthe Keller won the award for Best Supporting Actress, Filipp Zumbrunn for Best Cinematography and Myriam Rachmuth for Best Film Editing.

MY LITTLE SISTER celebrated its world premiere in competition at the Berlinale 2020. German World Sales Beta Cinema has sold the film to more than 15 countries to date.

The award for Best Documentary Film went to THE NEW GOSPEL by Swiss author Milo Rau (production: Langfilm – Bernard Lang AG, Olivier Zobrist). The German-Swiss coproduction premiered at the Venice Film Festival and was screened at the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam IDFA, among others. CAT&Docs in Paris is handling world sales.

First award for Sound Design

The award for Sound Design, presented for the first time this year, went to Peter Bräker for his sound design for Thomas Imbach’s NEMESIS. Alice Schmid won the award for Best Film Score for her own documentary film BURNING MEMORIES.

Swiss actress Sarah Spale won the award for Best Actress for her role in NEEDLE PARK BABY by Pierre Monnard. This year no awards were presented in the Best Actor category.

Awards for Güzin Kar and Georges Schwizgebel

YOUR STREET, realized and produced by Güzin Kar, received the Swiss Film Award for Best Short Film. The award for Best Animation Film went to DARWIN’S NOTEBOOK by Georges Schwizgebel (Studio GDS), and URBAN AMAZONS by Thaïs Odermatt (Konrad Wolf Film University of Babelsberg, Maximage GmbH) was honoured with the award for Best Graduation Film.

This year’s Special Academy Award went to the costume designer Linda Harper for her costumes in the films OF FISH AND MEN, NEEDLE PARK BABY and SPAGAT / ШПАГАТ.

The Honorary Swiss Film Award, announced by the Federal Office of Culture in February, went to Lilo Pulver for her oeuvre as an actress. Frédéric Maire, director of Cinémathèque suisse, held the laudatory speech.

The award ceremony was held online this year due to the coronavirus. The audience was able to watch the award ceremony live on www.quartz.ch.

The Swiss Film Award is organized by the Swiss Federal Office of Culture, together with its partners SRG SSR and Association “Quartz” Genève Zürich, and in collaboration with SWISS FILMS, the Swiss Film Academy and the Solothurn Film Festival.
