10.10.2005

The Swiss-Romanian co-production “Ryna” (Production: Pacific Films Sarl, Strada Films SA and Navarro Films SA, Geneva) received the grand prize “Vague d’Or” at the 7th edition of the Festival du Cinéma au Féminin in Bordeaux on October 9, 2005. This is the first award for Geneva resident and director Ruxandra Zenide, after her first-time feature film was shown in the competition section of the Montreal International Film Festival (Films du Monde) and in Sarajevo. The film has also received additional invitations to important film festivals in Switzerland and abroad: In November, “Ryna” will be the opening film at the 11th Festival Cinéma Tout Ecran (October 1 – November 5) in Geneva and will also be shown in the competition section of the festival. Ruxandra Zenide will then represent Switzerland at the 19th AFI Los Angeles Film Festival (November 3-13) in the “New Faces in European Cinema” program. Her movie is also part of the competition at the 54th Mannheim-Heidelberg Film Festival (November 17-26), and it will appear at the 46th Thessaloniki Film Festival (November 18-27).
“Ryna” tells the story of a 16-year-old girl and daughter of a poor Rumanian gas station attendant. Since his ultimate desire is to have a son, he raises her as a boy. This story is about strong family bonds, the search of a daughter for her mother, as well as the sudden collapse of the world of a despotic father. The film discusses the awakening of the soul of a young girl and the pain involved in doing so, as well as poverty, social oppression and the abuse of power by those who govern under the cover of a deceptive “freedom.
