15.09.2003

The Swiss-German film debut “Wenn der Richtige kommt” (“When the Right One Comes Along”) by Oliver Paulus and Stefan Hillebrand is among 15 films competing for the Altadis New Director’s Award at the 51st San Sebastian International Film Festival (September 18-27). The prize of 120,000 Euros, which is the largest sum of international festivals, will be awarded in the “Zabaltegi” section. “When the Right One Comes Along” is also eligible for the newly created “Arte” prize of 92,000 Euros.
Swiss filmmaker Oliver Paulus and his German colleague Stefan Hillebrand have known each other since film school, and they already collaborated on the highly recognized – and nominated for the 2002 Swiss Film Prize – short film “Die Wurstverkäuferin” in 2001. For their first full-length feature film “When the Right One Comes Along”, the two authors developed an improvisational spirit for the film in cooperation with its actors thus giving it a documentary feel. Paula, a cleaning woman, is the main character of the film. She has a crush on the Turkish security guard Mustafa. One day, when he no longer shows up for his work and Paula learns that he moved back to Turkey, she decides to visit him there even though she does not have an address. The film was shot on Mini DV with a budget of 400,000 Swiss Francs and has been transferred to 35mm film.

One member of the six-person jury for the Altadis New Director’s Award is Martial Knaebel, representative from the artistic directorate of the Fribourg Film Festival.
