Two prizes for “Maria Bethânia – música é perfume” at the Festival di Palazzo Venezia in Rome

The Swiss documentary film “Maria Bethânia – música é perfume” by Georges Gachot, which is a filmic portrait of the world-renowned Brazilian singer, won the prize for Best Film in the Music category as well as the prize for Best Soundtrack at the Festival di Palazzo Venezia in Rome, Italy. The festival, which took place for the second time from September 8 – 29, 2006, is dedicated to the cinematic expression of art, and shows documentary and feature films with a focus on classical music, dance, ballet, folk, pop, or jazz music.
The film “Maria Bethânia – música é perfume” was previously presented in the competition section at the 2005 Festival Visions du Réel in Nyon and has since been shown at 25 international film festivals, among them Buenos Aires, Leipzig, Rotterdam, and Seattle. This year, it won prizes at the Washington DC International Film Festival, and at the Fama Film Festival in Portugal. The film has found theatrical distribution in Brazil, France, Holland, Austria, and Switzerland, where approximately 100,000 viewers have already seen it. It was released in Belgian cinemas on September 23, and will also be shown in movie theaters in Argentina and in the United States.
