Two Swiss film productions have been nominated for the First Steps Award: the debut film “Satte Farben vor Schwarz” by Sophie Heldmann, a Swiss graduate from the German Film and Television Academy Berlin (DFFB), is among the five nominees for an award in the Feature Fiction Film category. The portrait film “Daniel Schmid – Le chat qui pense” by Pascal Hofmann and Benny Jaberg was produced as a graduation film at the Zurich University of the Arts and will compete in the Documentary Film category. This year marks the 11th edition of the First Steps Award in Germany, the most important award for debut films. On August 24, 2010, three juries in Berlin will present awards endowed with EUR 80,000 to the best graduation films by students at film schools in German-speaking countries.

Two well-known actors - Senta Berger and Bruno Ganz - star in the leading roles of Sophie Heldmann's graduation film "Satte Farben vor Schwarz." They portray an elderly married couple about to separate after spending 50 happy years together and are suddenly confronted with a terminal illness. The film was coproduced by Dschoint Ventschr in Zurich Film and will be distributed to cinemas in Germany by Farbfilm and in Switzerland by Look Now!.

The graduation film by Pascal Hofmann and Benny Jaberg "Daniel Schmid - Le chat qui pense" from the Zurich University of the Arts celebrated its premiere at the Berlinale 2010 and was produced by T&C Film in Zurich. The film has already been screened at festivals in Munich, Istanbul, Pesaro, La Rochelle and Jerusalem, and will travel to Pusan (Korea), Chicago, Vancouver and Montreal (Festival du Nouveau Cinéma) in autumn. "Daniel Schmid - Le chat qui pense" is currently in cinemas in the French-speaking region of Switzerland and will be released in the German-speaking region on September 2 (distributor: Salzgeber).
