Films by “Groupe 5” and young Swiss filmmakers in Brazil
Fifteen feature film productions from French-speaking Switzerland will be showcased in the “Além das Fronteiras: o Cinema Suiço” (Beyond the borders: Swiss filmmaking) programme in Rio de Janeiro (May 24 - June 5, 2011) and in São Paulo (May 31 - June 12, 2011). Swiss film directors Jeanne Waltz and Frédéric Mermoud will be present at the screening of this Swiss film series organised by SWISS FILMS in collaboration with the Brazilian Association “3moinhos produçoes.”
The programme spans works by the New Swiss Cinema - whose eminent filmmakers include Alain Tanner, Claude Goretta and Michel Soutter - and by the young generation of filmmakers in French-speaking Switzerland who draw on works by the legendary "Groupe 5."
Four films by Alain Tanner will be screened in the Brazilian metropolises: "La salamander" (1971); "Le milieu du monde" (1974); "Jonas qui aura 25 ans en l'an 2000" (1976); and "Dans la ville blanche" (1983). Two feature films "L'invitation" (1973) and "La dentellière" (1976) by Claude Goretta are also in the programme, as well as Michel Soutter's "Repérages" (1977) and Yves Yersin's "Les Petites Fugues" (1979).
The programme also comprises seven film productions by young Swiss directors whose works echo their predecessors' luminous period of Swiss filmmaking in the seventies: two works by Lionel Baier - "Comme des voleurs" (2006) and "Un autre homme" (2008) - as well as two works by Ursula Meier - "Des épaules solides" (2002) and "Home" (2008). In addition, Frédéric Choffat's "La vraie vie est ailleurs" (2006), Jeanne Waltz's "Pas douce" (2007) and Frédéric Mermoud's "Complices" (2009).
Jeanne Waltz and Frédéric Mermoud will travel to Rio de Janeiro to present their films personally to the audience and also offer young film students a Master class. The programme is a part of the activities organised by SWISS FILMS, the film promotion agency, has developed in Latin America since 2010.
