Le film est adapté du livre Hobalala de Marc Fischer, un écrivain allemand. Dans Hobalala Marc Fischer raconte sa recherche obsessionnelle de la dernière grande légende de la musique brésilienne, João Gilberto, le père fondateur de la Bossa Nova. Le livre a été publié en Allemagne en 2011, Marc Fischer s’est suicidé une semaine avant la publication de son livre. En reprenant la quête de Marc Fischer, en suivant ses pas un par un, grâce à tous les indices qu'il nous a laissés, nous poursuivons João Gilberto pour comprendre l'histoire, l'âme et l'essence même de la Bossa Nova.
