Malgré ses 89 printemps, Gertrud Forster a conservé une vitalité et une autonomie hors du commun. Sa plus grande peur est de finir démente dans un foyer de vieux. Elle est donc d’autant plus contrariée lorsqu’un élégant Anglais débarque chez elle et lui assure qu’elle l’a contacté sur un site de rencontres pour séniors. Comme il le lui prouve, mais que Gertrud n’en a aucun souvenir, celle-ci n’a plus qu’une idée en têt : mettre un terme à sa vie, autant que possible de façon autonome, avant d’atterrir dans un centre pour patients atteints de démence.
