Le 3 janvier 1889, Friedrich Nietzsche sort de sa maison, à Turin. Non loin de chez lui, un cocher est aux prises avec un cheval rétif. Le cocher perd patience et fouette le cheval. Nietzsche voit cette scène horrible, court vers le fiacre et se pend, en larmes, à l’encolure du cheval. Le propriétaire de son appartement le ramène à la maison, où pendant deux jours, il reste allongé, immobile, jusqu’à ce qu’il prononce ses dernières paroles «Mère, je suis bête»; il vécut encore dix ans, dans le mutisme et la folie. Mais qu’advint-il du cheval? C’est à cette question précise que le film tente de répondre.
