C’est l’histoire d’une rencontre entre Lazzaro, un jeune paysan si bon qu’on le croit simple d’esprit, et Tancredi, un jeune noble arrogant qui s’ennuie à l’Inviolata, un hameau resté à l’écart du monde sur lequel règne la marquise Alfonsina de Luna. Leur amitié se scelle quand Tancredi, par jeu, organise son propre enlèvement et demande son aide à Lazzaro. Cette relation sincère et joyeuse est une révélation pour Lazzaro. Une amitié si précieuse qu’elle lui fera traverser le temps et le mènera à la ville, à la recherche de Tancredi.
