Swiss documentary and animation filmmaking is represented at the 60th International Festival for Documentary and Animated Film (October 31-November 5, 2017) with a total of 10 short and feature-length film productions, six of which will be screened in competition.

THE CONGO TRIBUNAL by Milo Rau will screen in the International Competition. The film celebrated its world premiere in the Critic’s Week at Locarno Festival. In the midst of the Congolese Civil War, the film’s director succeeded in holding a symbolic tribunal with many of the parties involved to portray by way of example a multilayered view of this economic war.

Anka Schmid’s experimental documentary film HAIRY – an ingenious montage comprised of real-life, archival and animated footage – will celebrate its International premiere in the Animadok Competition.

TALKING MONEY by Sebastian Winkels, coproduced by the Swiss firm Catpics, will be screened in the German Competition.

Robert Müller’s PURE CHARCOAL will celebrate its world premiere in the International Programme. The film, which has been nominated for the Healthy Workplaces Film Award, portrays the archaic trade of charcoal burning. The only place this craft is still carried out throughout Western Europe is in Entlebuch in the region of Lucerne.

Stellar Swiss animation films

Celebrating their world premieres in the International Competition Short are Elodie Dermange’s animation film INTIMITY, as well as Michaela Müller’s multi-award-winning animation film AIRPORT and Justin Stoneham’s short documentary film REWIND FORWARD, which was honoured with the Pardino d’oro in Locarno.

Two short animation film productions – THE LITTLE BIRD AND THE CATERPILLAR by Lena von Döhren and THE POCKET MAN by Ana Chubinidze – have been selected for screening in the Kids DOK programme. Frederic Siegel’s multi-award-winning animation film RUBEN LEAVES will be screened in the Post-Angst special programme.
